Leaping Leprechaun Hat Free Crochet Pattern

For my very first blog post I have prepared a free crochet pattern for you. This is just the child size, which should fit children between the ages of 5-12. I hope you enjoy it!


Leaping Leprechaun Hat


Supplies:


  •  Less than 1 skein green worsted weight yarn (I used Red Heart Super Saver for this entire hat)
  •  Less than 1 skein black worsted weight yarn
  •  Less than 1 skein yellow worsted weight yarn
  •  I hook 5.5mm (for hat)
  •  H hook 5.0mm (for buckle)
  •  Yarn needle for weaving in ends and sewing on buckle.

Terms:


  • HDC- Half Double Crochet
  •  sl st – Slip Stitch
  •  Ch. – chain
  •  St – stitch
  •  SC – Single Crochet

Child size hat is designed to fit children between the ages of 5-12.

Using your 5.5mm (I) hook and green yarn begin with a magic circle. Here is the video I learned from if you need to learn or refresh your magic circle skills.


Row 1: chain 1, 8 HDC in loop. Join to 1st HDC with sl. St. (8)
Row 2: Ch 1, 2 HDC in same st, 2 HDC in each st, join to 1st HDC with sl st. (16)
Row 3: Ch 1, HDC in same stitch, 2HDC in next st *HDC in next st, 2 HDC in next st* around, join to top of 1st HDC with sl st (24)
Row 4: Ch 1, HDC in same stitch, HDC in next st, 2 HDC in next st *HDC in next 2 st, 2 HDC in next* around. Join to top of 1st HDC with sl st (32)
Row 5: Ch 1, HDC in same st, HDC in next 2 st, 2 HDC in next st *HDC in next 3 st, 2 HDC in next* around. Join to top of 1st HDC with sl st (40)
Row 6: Ch 1, HDC in same st, HDC in next 3 st, 2 HDC in next st *HDC in next 4 st, 2 HDC in next st* around. Join to top of 1st HDC with sl st (48)
Row 7: Ch 1 HDC in same st, HDC in next 4 st, 2 HDC in next st *HDC in next 5 st, 2 HDC in next* around. Join to top of 1st HDC with sl st (56)
Row 8: Ch 1, HDC in same st, HDC in next 12 st, 2 HDC in next st, *HDC in next 13 st, 2 HDC in next st* around. Join to top of 1st HDC with sl st (60)
Row 9: Ch 1, HDC in same st, HDC in each st around. Join to top of 1st HDC with sl st (60)
Rows 10-13: Repeat row 9
Row 14: Ch 1, HDC in same st, HDC in each st around. Join to top of 1st HDC with sl st (60). Fasten off.
Row 15: Change color to black, ch 1, HDC in same st, HDC in each st around. Join to top of 1st HDC with sl st (60)
Rows 16 and 17: Repeat Row 15. Fasten off (60)
Row 18: Change back to green. Ch 1, HDC in same st, HDC in each st around. Join to top of 1st HDC with sl st (60)
Row 19: Ch 1, SC in same st, SC in each st around. Join to top of 1st SC with sl st (60)
Row 20: Repeat row 19 (60)
Row 21: Ch 1, SC in same st, SC in each st around. Join to top of 1st SC with sl st (60). Fasten off.
Weave in Ends.

Buckle:
Using yellow yarn and your 5.0mm (H) hook
Chain 25, SC in second ch from hook. SC in each remaining ch. Join to 1st SC with slip stitch. Fasten off. Leave a long tail for sewing.

**TIP** Use the tail that was created when you made your slip knot to secure the two ends of your SC chain together when you weave it in.

Now sew that bad boy onto the front center of your hat in a squarish shape.
